SEO Resource Newsletter -
September 2004 B

Hi Everyone!

I hope those living in the South Eastern U. S. are safe and
surviving the flurry of hurricanes that keep pounding this area.

Here’s a little Q &A to start us off (sorry T&A not included):

Kevin,

I’ve recently been working with PDF’s on my website, but I’m not
sure of the best way to optimize them for the search engines …

- Sheila

Hi Sheila,

When optimizing a PDF file for the search engines, the first
action you’ll want to take is to give the PDF a keyword-rich file
name that is short and to the point such as
Idaho-butterflies.pdf, chocolate-cats.pdf,
lefthanded-widgets.pdf, etc. The second action is to write
keyword and content rich body text. For example, make sure
“chocolate cats” is near the top and all throughout the body
text.

The third action, for those who have the full version of Adobe
Acrobat (such as verson 6 at this writing) is to open the PDF in
Acrobat and go to File / Document Properties / Description where
you can input Title, Author, Subject and Keyword. You can next go
to Advanced / Document Meta Data and add Title, Author,
Description, Keywords and Copyright Notices.

Save and post your document and let us know how this works in the
SERP’s for you!

Hey Kevin,

I think my site has dropped off of Google, either that or it has
been buried by Google, but I keep going back page by page and I
can no longer find it. How do I check!

- Slim

Hey Slim,

One of the ways to check to see if your web pages are still
listed in Google is to type site:www.yoursite.com into Google and
perform a search. Be sure to substitute your website’s name for
“yoursite.com” and this will tell you if you have dropped off of
Google or not.

Kevin,

I’ve done everything I can to optimize my site but I can’t get
above a PR2 – what gives? - ChiTea

Hi ChiTea,

First, the word on many of the search engine forums is that
Google has not updated the Page Rank (PR) since June 2004.
Second, it would be best not to judge your website on PR for two
reasons: The Google toolbar registers PR inaccurately and PR has
nothing to do with whether your site is ranked well or not.

The Google toolbar PR ranking is just an estimate and faulty one
at that. Also, when you look through the top 10 or top 20 ranking
for any keyword phrase you will notice that websites are not
listed in PR order. This will tell you that PR is no longer a
useful tool. Don’t sweat it, just work on making your site and
back-links the best that they can be.

Rumor Mill

Rumor has it that TrafficPower.com has changed their name to
First Place or 1P.com so be careful! Just do a Google search for
“Traffic Power” and you will see that this company is not in the
top 20, but host of complaints against them are in the top 20.
Why not even check out http://www.trafficpowersucks.com or

news/news02.txt
if you have nothing better to do.

Google Brainteaser Starts Heads A Scratchin’

Mysterious banners at a Cambridge, Mass., subway stop have
commuters scratching their heads. The signs, challenging
passers-by to solve a complicated math problem, are actually a
cryptic pitch by Google, which is looking to hire more brainy
engineers. See the full National Public Radio story at:

Tip of the Week

If you have something newsworthy to say about your website, put
out a press release. Be sure to optimize the press release first
since it may be picked up by Google News or Yahoo News or another news service and will rank better if optimized. Press releases
can be distributed free on PRWeb.com

Take care and see you next newsletter. If you have questions,
send them in. Remember, not to ask for free website critiques,
but if you have general questions to share, send them in!
